I think "cozy" games like AC and Stardew tend to have toxic fanbases bc of just how easy they are. Unlike RPGs that require strategy, FPS/Shooter games that require keen hand eye coordination, or rhythm games that require coordination as well as patience... Life Sims and "Cozy" games often have minimal consequences and require minimal skill to play. Animal Crossing is especially simple to play when you consider that the consequences for in game actions are quite minimal compared to a game like The SiMS where your characters can literally die if you perform certain actions such as leaving them for awhile or Minecraft where there are hazardous blocks, violent mobs, and survival mechanics. The worst thing that can happen in Animal Crossing (naturally and without multiplayer inclusion) is probably scorpion/spider/bee stings which don't cause any real threat besides cutscenes and an unfortunate "ouchie boo boo" on the player's face as opposed to health depleting. Thus, with the skill bar set incredibly low and the majority of people nowadays owning a Switch, anyone and everyone can get into the game. This means that everyone from your little sibling to "kuromi.is.life32" the quirky and infamously petty internet firestarter can get in on the fun.
